This Devon Guild of Craftsmen curated exhibition at Totnes Museum celebrates the finest contemporary textile makers working in the South West alongside a museum collection that focusses on the town’s historical links with the wool trade. This show also launches a brand new exhibition space for art and craft work in the Museum building.
Among its more than 300 Members the Devon Guild has over 50 Members in textile disciplines, ranging across fine lacemaking, millinery, batik, applique and patchwork, embroidery, knitting, feltmaking and weaving. This exhibition features 7 Devon Guild textile makers:
Anna Gravelle - works with craft and digital processes to offer a range of interior furnishing fabrics and accessories that combine print and surface embellishment.
Liz Clay - makes hand felted textiles for haute couture and one-off pieces to commission.
Jane Deane - has been a spinner, weaver and dyer, using natural fibres and dyes for more than 30 years.
Trish Coady Clements - works in nuno-felt, which she creates by felting wool fibres into woven silk, producing a lightweight, diaphanous, drapeable textile, which she makes into luxurious garments.
Louise Cottey - creates handwoven, often hand-dyed contemporary fabrics for the home or to wear, in response to the West Country landscape.
Jenny Wilkinson - makes hand-woven rugs from the finest natural materials on her 50 acre hill farm in North Devon where her flock of Shetland sheep is kept for wool and conservation grazing.
Yuli Somme - is a feltmaker who specialises in making felted burial shrouds at her workshop using locally sourced materials and natural dyes.
