Talk about Hortus (exhibition) for Arts Award - Tue 23 May 2017 -Wed 24 May 2017

Hortus-Summer-Garden-Hill-drawing by Jude FreemanOccuring on 2 days, your school or learning group has the opportunity to visit a free OPEN DOOR event to support  Arts Award participants in the South West..

Our Riverside Gallery at the Devon Guild is showing an exhibition titled 'Hortus – A Dartmoor garden over time'.

HORTUS is Latin for garden - and this exhibition by local artist, Jude Freeman - shows her etchings, drawings and photographs, accompanied by a range of historical information and artefacts about the garden at Hill Farm, one of the 
preparatory-paintings-china shards-Jude-Freemanoldest Shards-etching-Jude-Freeman-for Hortusdwellings on Dartmoor.

We will present an enlightening and informative talk about HORTUS where the artist or the co-curator discusses work in the show and ideas behind it. (May 23 & 24.) The event is aimed at supporting schools or groups delivering the Bronze award, however this can be flexible to the required 
level.

Hortus-Fragment-of-Victorian-wallpaper-HILLSessions may be up to one hour including talk, discussion, questions and a relevant activity about the work on show.

Devon Guild are an ARTS AWARD supporting venue.

The event relates to key Arts Award offers:

  • Taking part in the arts: visiting our gallery, viewing and talking about the exhibiiton HORTUS.
  • Experiencing the arts as an audience member, at this event.
  • Arts Award Supporter logoFinding out about artists and arts organisations: meeting the artist / curator at the Guild gallery, investigating how they approached us, worked with our staff and set up the exhibition.
  • Sharing arts skills: being inspired by the work on show and following up with a related creative activity.

Ideas to explore: nature & wilderness; growth & decay; drawing from nature; mixed media (old photographs); researching local history; land, geology environment & mapping; architecture & landscaping; home & hearth; agriculture & farming - rural life, belief, & folk history; Mediaeval remains & religion: carvings, inscriptions, stories & records,

Talks can be arranged at different times on these days to suit schools but this would need to be arranged prior to visit. As Hortus is showing in our smaller gallery maximum numbers would be 30.

We also welcome school and group visits to our main gallery exhibitions and can give talks/tours about these if they are open when you visit.
