Student Membership

The Devon Guild has recently introduced a new Student Membership scheme to support student makers during their studies and at a very early stage in their careers.

The student scheme will inform students about what it means to be a professional maker, foster their career aspirations and let students gain insight into the working practices of a professional craft organisation. Student membership is not selected and is £20 annually.

Friends

The Devon Guild of Craftsmen has an active and growing group of over 400 Friends who enjoy substantial benefits and also support our work in a number of ways. Their subscription helps to finance the Guild's charitable activities, and they may also have the opportunity to use their skill and experience in practical ways as well. Many Friends are regular supporters and help at the Riverside Mill. This is a good opportunity to get to know Members, Guild staff and other Friends.

Exhibition Information

The Summer Show 2017

It is time to start preparing for The Summer Show, our annual Member exhibition which shows off the outstanding work of our membership. All full Members are welcome to submit. You might want to enter work of a different craft medium or collaborate with another Member. Whatever you choose to submit, just make sure the specified criteria are met. You can find all the information you need about submitting here.

The Selection Election Committee (SEC) will once again be presenting their Award for Excellence to one of the exhibitors. The winner will receive a £200 voucher to spend on work by another Guild Member’s work and will also be invited to submit a work to the 2018 exhibition outside of the selection process. Isabella Whitworth (Chairman of the SEC) has more on this and information about recruiting new members of the selection panel, please click here to view.

Magnificent Mires

The Devon Guild and Devon Wildlife Trust (DWT) have been in conversation about a DWT project which highlights the ecological importance of blanket bogs. The project is led by DWT in partnership with Dartmoor National Park, Dartmoor Preservation Association and The Duchy of Cornwall. It is supported by Heritage Lottery Funding.

To give it some added publicity, the Devon Guild shop will use Beautiful Blanket Bogs as a theme for the 2017 August bank holiday weekend. On Saturday 26 August we will run a number of activities including a family drop-in printmaking workshop run by Sarah Morris, a quiz, and DWT will be here with information on these fascinating habitats, and other activities for children and families.

We would like to invite interested Members to participate by making work with a Magnificent Mires/Beautiful Blanket Bogs theme for exhibition and sale in the shop over this period. To this end Jasmine Atkinson, from the Magnificent Mires project, and Ian Brooker, DNPA Ranger, have offered to lead a walk to Cranmere Pool on Saturday 3 June at 10.30am. Blanket bogs provide a dramatic landscape, serving as the inspiration for many myths and legends over the centuries, and Cranmere Pool is no exception. It has its own legends but more importantly is a wild and beautiful place rich in sphagnum mosses, sundews and sedges.
The pool lies within the Okehampton Artillery Range. Ian Brooker has offered to transport us to within a mile of the site using a military access route which was closed for civilian use in 2010. The walk will be about 3 miles in total, good footwear, waterproofs and a snack/picnic are advised. There is no cost for this but spaces are limited so please ring the shop to book place on 01626 832223.
