Schools & Colleges
Devon Guild of Craftsmen’s Freehand
scheme promotes hands-on visual arts and craft workshops run by experienced, professional artists and makers in schools and other communities.
We can help with arts and craft projects in schools by finding skilled workshop leaders to work with all age groups in a variety of materials and disciplines including printmaking, ceramics, textiles, willow, paper, recycled materials, natural materials and mosaic.
Projects can be tailored to tie in with key stage curriculum learning outcomes or to produce an artwork to enhance the school interior or outside space. More about Freehand - our craft education charity.
Freehand has some funding available to help with craft projects.
Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to know more or to discuss a project idea.
Visit and learn at the Guild
Teachers and learning groups are welcome to visit the exhibitions and craft-related events, year-round at the Devon Guild. They cover the full spectrum of contemporary craftmaking from the traditional to cutting edge - so there is always something new to learn! Everything you find here will help you enjoy and understand more about contemporary craft.
Our exhibitions have associated supporting notes, education panels, resource lists and reference books to help interpret the work in the gallery and there are do-it-yourself activities which relate to the craft on show, the techniques and stories behind its making. All staff are knowledgable and can tell you about what is on display and we can give short introduction tours about Guild history, local craft heritage and the exhibition themes.
We are delighted to have visits from schools, colleges and community groups to our gallery. Please let us know in advance about your group visit - we can offer a short introductory tour and discuss any specialist needs. If there are over ten please ensure the group is accompanied by an appropriate number of adults.
Tutors can download resources in advance from our Resources page...
There is a creative making area in the gallery, a cafe upstairs, adjacent and disabled parking and a large green park just opposite our gallery.

Help with ArtsAward
Our organisation offers children and young people the chance to work towards their Arts Award. They can do the following:
attend a workshop, an artist's talk or demo
review/record exhibitions, performances or festival events
use our knowledge about craftmakers and cultural opportunities
find a basis for skill-sharing and project-leadership
Our venue provides a rich resource -- through the gallery and people working here -- also through access to creative networks, knowledge of local practitioners, wider knowledge of the creative industries and craft heritage, as well as expertise about careers in contemporary applied arts and design.
We can work with tutors and group leaders to offer inspiration, ideas and guidance into the key areas of art, craft and design covered by
Arts Award. A range of Educational Resources based on Devon Guild exhibition themes can be viewed or downloaded to get you thinking! Attending talks or workshops can be great for young people to find out about an area of craft that appeals to them or even get interested in creative career pathways.
