Jill Fanshawe Kato | Ceramics | Devon

Jill Fanshawe Kato grew up in Devon, which inspired the lifelong love of the natural world which is apparent in her creative work.

She graduated in Fine Art from Chelsea School of Art in London and later studied ceramics in Japan for four years. She has subsequently had 46 exhibitions of her ceramics in Japan and exhibited widely internationally.

Jill has travelled widely to places such as The Pantanal in Brazil, Costa Rica, Egypt, the Maldives and New Mexico and the vegetation, wildlife and indigenous culture of these places have inspired her ceramic work. She also admires the arts, ceramics and music of Spain.

Working from her recently-established studio near Moretonhampstead in Devon, her work is mainly hand built or thrown and altered, and ranges from functional to large sculptural pieces, mainly fired in a gas kiln to 1270c. Her pottery evolves from new directions with form and colour and life experiences.

Having studied Painting at Chelsea School of Art, Jill subsequently trained as a Potter in Japan for 4 years, where she has had 46 exhibitions of her ceramics. Inspired by travel and the natural world, Jill has recently established her studio in Devon. Her stoneware ceramics are fired to 1270c.
