Mandie Gillard

Mandie Gillard | Mixed Media | Dorset

Mandie's work is deeply personal. Part of her daily mindful practise is time spent sketching doodles. She is fascinated to see the many characters emerging on paper and finds the process both relaxing and creative. Each doodle is given a title which is representational of that instant, not before or after. Whilst each character that develops spontaneously allows the viewer to wander more deeply into the mysterious, curious, sometimes queer world of imagination.

Mandie spent her formative years growing up in Japan, and is innately influenced by Japanese culture, Mingei (folk craft) and print making. Following a degree course in Textiles at Central Saint Martins, Mandie went on to work for Liberty of London Print Ltd in their design studio. It was here that she enhanced her technical ability to combine colours and redefine pattern. It is this intricate attention to detail and refined technical discipline that she consistently commits to each individual piece.

Mandie interlinks her lino and stitch practise, by using line and mass in both medium to give stability and movement to the pieces. The use of Japanese sashiko stitch, felt applique, considered pattern and scale are also an intrinsic, vital part of each make.
