Alison Hepburn | Mosaic | Devon

Alison makes mosaics using both traditional and contemporary materials and techniques.

After many years working as an illustrator, the discipline of sketching and drawing is important as she plans a new work. Once the design is finalised and the outline is drawn out, each piece begins with a carefully chosen palette of glass and ceramic, the mosaic is then made balancing the design with the materials so that they work together and neither dominate the other.

Alison works to combine figurative subjects with an abstract use of glass combining the best of both worlds.

Alison studied painting at Exeter College of Art followed by a career as an illustrator in London before she discovered mosaic over twenty five years ago. She has exhibited widely in the UK and has work in various overseas projects including one at Australia Zoo, the Urban Eyes project in New Orleans and the Ruins Project in Pennsylvania.

Alison has written two books on mosaic techniques and many articles for mosaic magazines. She recently returned to Devon after eighteen years in Yorkshire and the change of scenery is reflected in the colours and subjects that are now emerging in her work.
