Jude Freeman | Printmaking | Devon

'My earliest recollection is of being in a garden surrounded by grass and plants nearly as tall as me. That feeling a mixture of curiosity and elation still colours my response to nature. In making art I look to capture this original vision of existence in the world.

Since studying Rembrandt's etchings at University I have been fascinated by intaglio printmaking and through practice find that the mysteries of this alchemic medium gradually reveal themselves. The etched line is made by the mordant biting into the copper plate through various grounds in ways both linear and painterly. The process can be volatile and unpredictable leading to chance effects and occasional flashes of vitality which I respond to and build upon'

Dartmoor has been Jude's home for twenty years. She works out of doors as much as possible, walking on the moor daily.

Flowers and plants are an eternal source of inspiration and joy and through close observation an understanding of our connectedness with them grows.

Through this work she seeks to convey some sense of the miraculous in the apparently mundane, the wonder that can be glimpsed in the everyday world.
