Julia Finzel | Printmaking | Devon

Julia has had a strong connection to animals since growing up on a farm and has always made drawings of them.

She makes etchings, photo-etchings and mono-prints as a more immediate form of printmaking. Through this process, in line and tone she captures the essence of those wonderful creatures. As the animals emerge in the creative process, Julia is observed with the same curiosity and humour by the animals.

Julia works from her studio in Brixham, and was at the Dartington Print workshop for twenty five years and more recently at The Double Elephant in Exeter.

She made her first book of etchings called ‘The Dancing Matador’ which was exhibited at MAKE Southwest (formerly Devon Guild of Craftsmen) in September & October 2016, as part of a printmakers’ book exhibition celebrating 40 years of printmaking at Dartington Print workshop with Michael Honnor.

Julia first learnt her etching techniques at 'La Bottega Del Tintoretto' in Venice, where she lived and had her first solo exhibition in Venice in 1993 at La Galleria Mnemoisine.

The hand printed book A Printmakers Flora was exhibited at the Thackery Gallery and bought by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1996.
