Mark Cullen

Mark Cullen | Textiles | Cornwall

A loom glimpsed in early childhood left a deep impression. Mark now weaves large colourful rugs using richly blended yarns many of which are hand dyed using natural ingredients. Personal adaptations to his loom give him wide design freedom.

Every rug is a story that slowly emerges in notes and sketch books of the natural world and is developed via dyeing and yarn selection in to a pallete of colours that find their way on to a shuttle.

The process of weaving has become steadily more intuitive with experience; only a small section of the work is visible at any time and each piece takes many weeks to make so they are gradually distilled as they seek a satisfying conclusion.

Mark studied hand weaving at Bradford College.
